Finishing an organizing project isn’t the end. It is only the beginning. You have to maintain a space.
Finishing your project is the beginning of learning and incorporating a new skill into your daily routine. But when you look at organizing as a one and done project, you end up right back where you started in a matter of months. Or maybe weeks. And technically, you didn’t really organize the space…you just cleaned it.
That’s why today I want to give you 3 steps you can take to make maintaining your organizing efforts stick.
THREE TIPS TO MAINTAIN AN ORGANIZED SPACE
- Just Do It! Firstly, use the 2-Minute rule from David Allen’s classic productivity book “Getting Things Done”. If a task will take you less than 2 minutes, just do it now. All those little, easy tasks that you avoid will quickly make you space feel cluttered again. Doing small, frequent, incremental tasks will make it much easier to maintain a space than if you have to plan time to do a complete overhaul. For example you might :
- Unload the dishwasher.
- Put a load of laundry away right away.
- Put your shoes, coat, and/or bag away when you come in the door.
- Pick up toys before getting another toy out.
- Hang up clothes your intend to wear again or that you decided not to wear.
- Put away ingredients when preparing a recipe.
- Schedule time to hit the reset button. Next, are you making time to reset your space? This could be on Sunday nights. Make sure you clear the stairs, put away laundry or clean out a backpack. Or doing laundry on Friday nights then putting it away. Now you don’t have to think about it on Sunday. And you can enjoy the last part of your weekend. The biggest take away from this tip is SCHEDULING the time to hit the reset and get things back in the order. When don’t set aside a specific time to maintain the space, the less likely you are to actually do it. And the longer you wait to reset the space, the harder it is to reset the way you want it.
- A great example of a regular reset to keep you on track is The Sunday Basket by Lisa Woodruff at Organize 365. Lisa collects everything she do quickly and easily in a basket (in other words via the 2 minute rule). Then she sets aside time every Sunday to visit and address the items in her Sunday basket. This is a great way to stay on top of paperwork and little items that slip through the cracks. You can find out more about Lisa’s Sunday Basket here.
- Make your system work for you. Finally, are you or your family are struggling to maintain an organizing system that you’ve put it place? Take a step back and figure out why it might not be working. Are you putting time in to maintain it? Is it too complicated for you or some family members? Could it be simplified so you could do 2-minute tasks to maintain it? If system isn’t working, it doesn’t mean you should give up. It means you should figure out a better system. In addition, if you are struggling with coming up with a better system, ask for help. Google ideas, look at Pinterest or consult a professional. It is so worth a little research and tweaking to make sure those efforts you put into organizing your space. And teaching your family organizing skills aren’t for naught.

- 1 bottle Rosé
- 6-8 Strawberries
- 1 1/2 oz Lemon Juice
- Pour wine into ice cube trays, on a cookie sheet or into a large Tupperware container and freeze for at least 6 hours. It won't be completely solid because of the alcohol.
- Add frozen wine, strawberries and lemon juice to blender. Blend until it comes together, but not so long that it starts to melt.
