Working for yourself can seem like an ideal employment choice for moms…
You set your own schedule, do something you love AND have time left to pick up and drop off from school, right? And yet many mompreneurs often feel like there isn’t enough time or that they are spinning their wheels. So much of it comes down to time management and clear priorities for mompreneurs.
According to a 2017 survey by 99 designs, 71% of mom entrepreneurs are also the primary caregiver in the home. That means a lot of juggling between work life and home life. And 44% sometimes feel guilty about entrepreneurship and 39% often put in a “second shift” to work on their business after the kids are in bed.
That is why this week we are focusing on time management tips for mompreneurs. I chat with Barb Stauffer and Leah Monaghan from Root 23 Simple Syrups. With a thriving business and 5 middle school/high school students between them, Barb and Leah are busy with a capital “B”. But we chat some ways to delegate and automate to make the most of the work time and family time. And all while sipping delicious Grapefruit Basil Palomas featuring their Root 23 Simple Syrups.
MOMPRENEUR TIME MANAGEMENT TIPS
Here are some of the highlights from our conversation…
When it comes to balancing entrepreneurship and family life, find places you can delegate. Whether they are business-related tasks or tasks for the home, find or hire help to take the load off.
Barb and Leah ask for help from friends and family in tasks like assembling gift boxes at Christmas. And they have hired where they know they will see an ROI more quickly. For instance, they use brand ambassadors at a Farmer’s market on the weekend. This frees them up to do things with their family but increases their sales because when people try, they are way more likely to buy.
If you’ve been in business long enough to notice patterns, use the slower times during the year to put some new systems in place to help streamline and simplify for the times when your schedule gets more hectic. For Leah and Barb, September is the calm before the holiday storm. If they want to get some new habits in place, now is the time to do it.
When it comes to time management while working from home, it is important to evaluate what is truly a priority. Do you NEED to respond to that email in the evening or can you set up an auto-responder to let the person know you will get back to them then next time you have office hours? Keep those evening family hours sacred by finding ways to automate and delegate.
